Ethel enjoys studying history because she has a deep fascination with the past. It’s not that she wants to live in the past -- she just wants to understand history better so she can relate its lessons to the present. Her hope is that studying the past will give her a better understanding of the future. Ethel has read a lot of history books and is quite knowledgeable about the past. However, she has not given a lot of thought on how it would be if she actually lived in the past or the future. I know it’s hard to believe, but Ethel has located a secret time portal in the library at the university. One night she was studying at the library and saw something strange out of the corner of her eye. She went for a closer look and discovered an unusual object that turned out to be a machine that could travel through time! Ethel was in utter disbelief about her discovery. She was very excited at all of the new possibilities open to her, including the chance to possibly witness firsthand many of the events she had only read about in her history books. Ethel is excited and eager to use the time machine, but she realizes she must be very careful that she does not alter the course of history and perhaps even the present.
